Hello, I'm Mike Dunn and this is my blog. I like to write songs, play songs and talk about songs. I dig Paul Westerberg and grilled cheese.

The Sundowner Sessions / Part I

“I think this is going to be the first song, it needs a something cool at the beginning. Maybe some feedback? Is that hack? Who cares as long as it sounds cool.”

CJ turned the tiny Dr. Z head up all the way. It’s only 10 watts, you have to crank it.

Something’s coming.

Like a hundred crashing guitars… or just a big bass chord. It’s definitely big and it’s sounding like I wanted it to, or as close as you can get to sounding like something that didn’t exist beforehand. That’s the thing, we all want to be something else, even your heroes wanted to be their heroes.

They weren’t and I’m not either.

But it’s something.

I guess it’s a matter of dealing with yourself, knowing your voice or something like that. You can’t escape it. But, I think we’re starting to understand our voice and maybe finding some pieces of the stew that you didn’t realize were in their before. As long as it’s tasty right?

I got a real job.

That’s a dirty word, or a dirty statement I should say, around these parts. Constantly re-evaluating your place in a scene, in a style, in a city, is an exhausting place to be… however necessary that exhaustion may be on the road to arena rock glory (ha). So we’re focused on the good, the simple things. Among those is having fun, which we have given considerable attention to lately… we have a hotel bill and two empty jugs of margarita mix to show from the last weekend alone.

We’ve got half of the record done and I like it. We’re working with really talented people. I don’t know what it’s going to sound like, I think it makes sense. As long as it’s real it will make sense.

“Don’t worry be happy”
… or “Most things I worry about never happen anyway.”
